How is sleep apnea diagnosed?

Sleep apnea is a condition that causes you to stop breathing for short periods during sleep. There are different types, including:

  • Obstructive Sleep Apnea (OSA) – caused by a blocked airway
  • Central Sleep Apnea (CSA) – caused by brain signal issues
  • Complex or Mixed Apnea – a combination of both

Proper diagnosis helps determine the type and severity of sleep apnea so you can get the right treatment from the start. Learn more.

What are the benefits of a professional sleep study?

A professional sleep study can:

  • Confirm whether you have sleep apnea
  • Determine the type (OSA, CSA, or complex)
  • Measure severity and how it affects your oxygen levels, heart rate, and sleep cycles

Once your results are in, we create a treatment plan personalized to you, not just your symptoms.

Do I need a referral for a sleep study?

You don’t need a referral to get diagnosed. In many provinces, a referral from your family doctor is required for PSG (Level 1 Polysomnography), but HSAT may be available directly through sleep health clinics like Resolve Sleep Health. However, there are some important distinctions to understand between getting diagnosed and beginning treatment. Learn more.

How does a home sleep apnea test (HSAT) work?

A Home Sleep Apnea Test, also known as HSAT, is a simplified sleep study prescribed to diagnose obstructive sleep apnea (OSA). Unlike traditional sleep studies conducted in a lab, HSAT allows you to sleep in the comfort of your own home while wearing a portable monitoring device. This device typically records breathing patterns, oxygen levels, heart rate, and snoring—all the essentials needed to detect sleep apnea.

  • Convenience: Conducted at home, making it less disruptive and more comfortable.
  • Cost-effective: Often covered by Canadian provincial health plans or insurance and generally less expensive than in-lab studies.
  • Quick Results: Faster scheduling and turnaround times.
What's different between a Home Sleep Apnea Test (HSAT) and Level 1 Sleep Study (Polysomnography)?

In Canada, most patients suspected of having moderate to severe obstructive sleep apnea will start with an HSAT due to its convenience and cost-effectiveness. However, if your symptoms are complex or suggest other sleep disorders, your healthcare provider may recommend a PSG for a more comprehensive evaluation. It’s important to discuss your symptoms and medical history with a sleep health expert to determine the best approach. Learn more about HSAT and PSG.

Is my purchase covered under insurance?

Insurance providers may cover a portion or all of the cost depending on your benefits. Check with your insurer to see what your specific policy covers. Once a purchase has been made, you can submit the appropriate documentation along with your purchase invoice to your insurer for reimbursement.
