Home Sleep Apnea Testing FAQs

What is a Home Sleep Apnea Test?

A Home Sleep Apnea Test, also known as HSAT, is a simplified sleep study prescribed to diagnose obstructive sleep apnea (OSA). Unlike traditional sleep studies conducted in a lab, HSAT allows you to sleep in the comfort of your own home while wearing a portable monitoring device. This device typically records breathing patterns, oxygen levels, heart rate, and snoring—all the essentials needed to detect sleep apnea.

It's convenient, cost-effective and provides quick results.

How does a Home Sleep Apnea Test work?

You wear a small, portable device that monitors your breathing, oxygen levels, and sleep cycles overnight. The sleep test is performed in the comfort of your own home under the guidance of a sleep health specialist.

The data collected during the HSAT is then meticulously analyzed by trained experts. Following the analysis, the sleep study results are interpreted by a Respirologist who specializes in diagnosing and treating sleep disorders. They will review the findings in detail and provide you with personalized recommendations for treatment based on your specific needs.

Is a Home Sleep Apnea Test accurate?

For moderate to severe obstructive sleep apnea, HSATs are very accurate. They may be less reliable for complex sleep disorders and those with comorbidities.

How do I know if I'd be a good candidate for Home Sleep Apnea Testing?

HSATs are best for adults who have one or more symptoms of sleep apnea including snoring, feeling tired during the day, or having pauses in breathing during sleep.

Home testing is a viable option for those who do not have comorbid conditions. If you suffer from heart failure, COPD or neuromuscular disorders, it is recommended that you consult a sleep physician about testing done in a lab setting.

If you're unsure if you'd be a good candidate, give us a call at 1-866-598-5370.

Is Home Sleep Apnea Testing covered by provincial health plans or private insurance?

HSAT is often covered by Canadian provincial health plans or insurance and is generally less expensive than in-lab studies.

How long does the Home Sleep Apnea Test take?

You typically wear the device for one night. After your results are uploaded and reviewed and interpreted by a Respirologist who specializes in diagnosing and treating sleep disorders. They will review the findings in detail and provide you with personalized treatment plan if applicable. The review typically takes place within two weeks.

Is a Home Sleep Apnea Test as good as a lab test?

HSATs are great for diagnosing uncomplicated obstructive sleep apnea. Lab studies (Polysomnography or PSG) are better for complex sleep disorders.

Learn more about the differences between HSAT and PSG.

What happens if I test positive for sleep apnea?

If you test positive for sleep apnea, your healthcare provider will prescribe treatment based on your individual needs. They may recommend CPAP Therapy, Oral Appliances, lifestyle changes or further testing depending on your results.

Can a Home Sleep Apnea Test detect other types of sleep disorders?

HSAT mainly screens for obstructive sleep apnea. It won't be able to diagnose insomnia, narcolepsy or other types of complex sleep disorders.
